Pre-Treatment Instructions

Before Your Apicoectomy

  1. You have been given 2 prescriptions; please have them filled prior to your appointment. Begin taking your prescription for the antibiotic the day before your surgical procedure and continue until gone.

  2. This is a minor surgical procedure and will be performed under a local anesthetic. You will not be "put to sleep."

  3. It will not be necessary to bring a driver with you for your appointment, but please feel free to bring someone if this will make you feel more comfortable.

  4. Slight discomfort may be experienced after the surgery, although many patients experience less than 24 hours of soreness that would require prescription strength medications.

  5. It is not unusual to experience some bruising or swelling following surgery. Swelling will generally peak in 2-3 days. You will be given an ice pack at our office after your surgery to help minimize swelling. Please have extra ice packs available at home to use after your appointment.

  6. You will need to return to our office in 5-7 days to have your sutures removed unless we have arranged to have your dentist remove the sutures for you.

  7. A light meal is recommended prior to your appointment. You will be numb for approximately 3-5 hours and should not chew during that time. Fluids are permitted while numb.
